When I was first diagnosed, that began a time of having to rethink many of my long-time beliefs about what foods were healthy for me, and what were not.  For instance, I thought it would still be okay to have a small glass of apple or orange juice, but I learned that it really spiked my BG.  So no more juice for me.

As to fruits:  I do allow myself to have a limited amount, infrequently.  It is a real treat to have a small slice of watermelon once or twice during the summer.  I will allow myself 1/4 cup of blackberries occasionally.  I might also allow myself to have 5 or 6 bing cherries.  But I emphasize that these are treats, had only once in awhile and savored!

As to dessert, I have something almost every night, but the desserts are not fruit-based.  I made Shanny's pumpkin pie recipe recently and it was easy to make and quite good.  I also like to make a sugar free pudding (chocolate), with a combination of heavy whipping cream and water (instead of milk), and I add in a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter.  Oh my, it is very rich and good!

You have to test for yourself regarding fruits.  I can eat about 1 oz of apple or watermelon in a serving but not everyday. Sometimes it takes me a week to eat a whole apple.  We are all so different as to what we can tolerate, the only way to know what is safe is to test.][/size
